How is the universe endless

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 13-05-20] [Hit: ]
since space was infinitely big and all the matter was within an infinitely small (or, OK, very small) point. But notice: If the occupied universe is finite, as we think it is, but the unoccupied space is infinite,......

Thank you for walking with me. :-)

The universe might be like this. It might be even more complicated.

The higher level thinking guys disagree with me on this, but I think of space as really extending out indefinitely far in every direction. Since we think of our "universe" as having come from something very small (maybe a point) then I would argue that there is space which was not occupied (The big thinkers disagree and say that if it ain't occupied it ain't there).

If it indeed started as a point, an if indeed empty space was out there waiting for something to fill it, then most-most-most of space was empty, since space was infinitely big and all the matter was within an infinitely small (or, OK, very small) point.

But notice: If the occupied universe is finite, as we think it is, but the unoccupied space is infinite, then the occupied portion is still infinitesimal.

One theory says that the universe is an expanding sphere. Meaning that, objects that are 93 billion light year or 28 billion parsec away may be receding away from us faster then the speed of light. In that sense, anything that travels(and nothing can travel and overtake the expansion of the universe) will go on forever, making the universe looks endless.

Pictures can say more than thousand well chosen words can:

When I think too long about infinity, I get mentally "dizzy". Ooog!! I might even get a headache if I keep thinking about it.

There are some things that humans are just not able to understand - an endless universe doesn't fit with our normal experiences or our sense of "logic". Doesn't mean that its not true, of course. Its not crazy to think its endless, just outside what we consider rational.

The universe is "Finite" but unbounded.

This means that the universe is expanding But will one day some 100`s of trillions of years into the future come to an end-hence the universe is NOT endless.

I can't stop thinking of it either. There's just no way to explain it.
