water is a compound. (not a mixture)
alcohol could go either way.
alcohol as in a beverage is a mixture.
alcohol as in rubbing alcohol is a mixture of a compound called isopropanol and water.
a specific alcohol like methanol, ethanol, or isopropanol, is a compound.

alcohol is both, depending on what you're referring to... drinkable alcohol is a mixture. **** like methanol, ethanol and such are compounds and aren't mixtures.
