Draw a right triangle where the height y = 7 and width x = 3
Use Pythagorean Method: a^2 + b^2 = c^2, where c = hypotenuse (direct distance by boat).
7^2 + 3^2 = c^2
49 +9 = c^2
58 =c^2
Take square root of each side to find c.
Sqrt 58 =c
+ - 7.61577 =c
Since we are talking distance (positive); c is approx 7.61577 miles

You are decorating a large evergreen tree in your yard for the holidays. The tree stands 25 feet tall and 15 feet wide. You want to hanG the string of lights from top to bottom draped on the outside of the tree. How long should the string of lights be? Explain
An evergreen tree looks like a triangle I suppose.
Draw an inverted T (upside down); the bottom width is 15, the middle length (a perpendicular bisector) is 25 high. From the top point, draw the hypotenuse legs on the left side and right side, you should get an isosceles triangle with a perpendicular bisector in the middle.
The bisector forms 2 right triangles; each with a base of 7.5 because 15/2 =7.5
Use the Use Pythagorean Method again: 7.5^2 + 25^2 =c^2
56.25 + 625 = 681.25 =c^2
Sqrt 681.25 =26.1 = c = hypotenuse
Light strings should be 26.1 ft to cover to bottom.

First one is about 7.62 or radical 58. The second one is about 26.1
