It's all the same physics but there are so many different societies, each with different emphasis and expectations about what the different members of that particular society may potentially contribute in the short and long term and those expectations largely maintain and modify the popular perception or the opinions of whatever clique holds power to give several different pictures of "The Role" of anything in each society. If you have a particular society in mind and a particular period of history you might be able to get something out of newspapers and any surviving records of political polemic from that period. Then choose just one particular class, caste or clique and try to work out whether they had a clear idea of the role.
