Whats your opinion on fruit flies?

They are truly God's gift to science.
They may be tiny creatures, but the have the unique characteristic of having very large chromosomes and a simple genetic makeup, makiing them ideal for studying genetics. That's why they were the choice for early genetic researchers. Plus they are easy to breed, have a quick breeding cycle, and take up very little space.
Who knows what the state of genetics would be today if early scientists had chosen to study blue whales instead of fruit flies.
