Did Robert Goddard invent the rocket for speed or for going to space

Robert Goddard invented the rocket ship, but why? Did he invent it so that man could go faster or so that it could go to space?

Robert H. Goddard invented the liquid fueled rocket in 1926. The solid fueled rocket had been around for 8 or 9 centuries.
He was working on rockets in the hopes of eventually sending people to the Moon.
