All stars already have names or catalog numbers. There is no way you can name a star. If you discover a comet, it will be named after you. If you discover an asteroid, you can name it following certain rules.

You can't. You only get to name comets and asteroids, and only if you discover them yourself. Stars are named either for the old Arabic names (bright ones) or by catalog number - you cannot legally buy or name a star. All the companies offering to let you do so are basically scams (for 'entertainment value only'). The International Astronomical Union is the only legal body that can name stars, and they don't name them after people. I'm sure I was the first person to see thousands of stars, but no one even cares about that, much less cataloging them all and naming them.

You could get a shot at naming one if you were a lead astronomer and discovered something about a star that currently had no name. However you'd pretty much have to give it a name that looks about like a serial number. You wouldn't be able to call it Nancy's Star or anything like that.

-
Become a member of the International Astronomical Union and become part of the team that approves the names of stars.

Of course, there are all kinds of scam websites that would be most happy to take your money in exchange for a worthless certificate saying you own or can name a star - it would be simpler and cheaper (and worth about the same) to just make your own certificate on your PC.

-
Discover it yourself (or be friends with someone who discovers a star) and even then it'd have to be an unusual star to get a name.

Otherwise, you don't (though there are plenty of criminals who'll take your money and give you a certificate claiming that you've named a star those are all scams).

Sorry, most, if not all visible stars are named.
