The Big 2012 Hoax is... a lie.
The "idea" of the end-of-times on December 21, 2012, was invented during the Summer of 2003. It was invented by the same charlatans who had just finished running a hoax based on the fake "Planet-X".
The date itself comes from an older lie: the end of the Mayan calendar. The lie was invented by José Argüelles for a book he wrote (published in 1987) about calendars -- he was trying to sell the idea of his own "natural" calendar, therefore he had to invent "problems" with all other calendars.
He used a Mayan calendar because, back in 1972, José had claimed (in another book) to be a reincarnated Mayan god (even though some of us are old enough to remember that he was born in Minnesota). José simply took a round-figure date (there is one every 394 years in the Mayan counting system) and invented the claim that it would be the end of the calendar.
However, José himself never claimed that the end-of-the-calendar meant the end of times (this lie was invented by the charlatans as they created the Big 2012 Hoax).
Planete-X is a fake planet, invented by Nancy Leider, for her story about being abducted. In her story, she was picked, by the aliens, as the official communication contact for the whole human race. Aliens gave her information about this rogue planet that was going to cause big problems on Earth (global tsunamis, pole flips, etc.).
