The earth's shadow from the sun completely covers the moon. The shapes of the moon is caused by the shadows of the earth made by the suns rays.

Lunar eclipses occur during a full moon when the earth aligns with the moon and casts its shadow on the moon. I'm fairly sure that they happen more frequently than solar eclipses.
