folks need to delve a little deeper to see why he's the hero that he is.... we can argue all day about him being the first of anything and feel bad for the others that were with him and not mentioned all the time, but.... what made him a hero was just this.... his ability to fly anything saved the United State's whole moon mission program!!.... yes , he did.... they were coming down in the wrong place, a place that could have crippled the ship or caused a crash and meant the lives of the two men on it and possibly the one in orbit, too..... the whole program might not have gone on if Neil hadn't taken the ship in hand, even with his heart beat at 150 and only seconds of fuel left in the tank, and steered it a little bit sideways to pick a better landing spot..... THAT is why he's a hero in my book... he did it BY HAND.... flying by the seat of his pants.... doing what a great fly-boy does and does well.... the best of the TOP GUNS.....
and calling him a hero 'among the greatest of all time' is no misnomer.... not in this country.... who else can you name who provided such a service to his country?..... and didn't DIE????....we call lots of people heroes who have died in a heroic manner... but this guy brought it home..... so did the guys in 13.... they're right up there, too...
