So, i live in about the middle of canada and im looking out the window facing West and there is a bright star or planet it is about 5:25 pm any ideas?

Mars is low in the southwest and Vega is about 45 degrees up in the west. Bout are sure you are looking _west_ and not _east_? Because Jupiter is very bright in the east.
