Do bicoid mutants survive

just want to make sure...also, a possibly more general question, how do mutations in maternal genes effect body plan?......
I understand that they lack anterior structures, but do they still survive? I would think not buuuut.... just want to make sure...

also, a possibly more general question, how do mutations in maternal genes effect body plan?

In biology, there is rarely a cut-and-dry answer, but it's pretty safe to say that the serious bicoid mutants don't live very long after becoming larvae.

Bicoid is a type of maternal effects gene. Screw that one up, and the head is missing or in the wrong spot. There are certain genes that do not take into consideration the genotype of the embryo, and those are either maternal or paternal effects genes. If you mutate and screw these up, the embryo simply won't form correctly. Vague answer to a general question, but I hope it makes sense.
