I got a question about the leaves in October? Aren't they supposed to change color? Or do they normally take half of October to change?

answers:
busterwasmycat say: This year was a very odd year from my experience. The leaves stayed green until very late (early October around here) and now have changed all at once, together. I had always understood that color change was related to decreasing sunlight, but clearly that is not the only thing that matters. The weather must be important to explain this unusual behavior.

Metalplanttag say: A lot of that depends on the environment.
-
y say: If you are in new england, the weird summer has altered the normal foliage season
-
Jake No Chat say: The leaves do change color, and the change can be impacted by the weather, so there are variations in how things look on any given day during the season on different years.
-
Abraham say: Leaves are fun
-
Mr Right say: It depends on the variety of tree, some take longer to change color than others.

It also depends on where the tree actually is, I find that trees that are not sheltered enough change color fairly quickly and lose their leaves quickly because of being exposed to the wind.

Some trees stay green until November, Alder trees are an example of that. If there is little to no wind in October/November you get more colours because the leaves have more time to change since they haven't been blown off yet.
