What are the oxidation states of each element on each side of the equation? KCLO->KCL +1/2O2

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-05-01] [Hit: ]
the hypochlorite ion has an overall charge of 1-,K 1+, ClO- --> Cl 1+,KCl --> K 1+,O2 --> neutral, or no charge,......
Can someone explain how to determine oxidation states if the element is not by itself, please :)

KClO = potassium hypochlorite, the hypochlorite ion has an overall charge of 1-, K has a charge of 1+
K 1+, ClO- --> Cl 1+, O 2- = overall charge of 1-

KCl --> K 1+, Cl 1-

O2 --> neutral, or no charge, since this is a pure element
