Why is it safe to pour a mixture of HNO3 and NAOH into the drain

Nitric acid and NaOh are both dangerous. But why is a mixture of the 2 less dangerous?

HNO3 and NaOH combine to make water and NaNO3. Both water and NaNO3 are quite harmless.
