How do you find the pH of a buffer solution after something has been added to it

Like say a buffer contained X and Y, and you added Z to it, how would you go about finding the pH after this addition just in general (could you try to explain the calculations to me because when I post real examples the answers just confuse me more). Thanks I know this question is a bit weird.

If I try and explain it in terms of X,Y and Z I think that you will be even more confused ( and so will I , probably)
