Hi,
I need help with two problems , it's fill in the blank.

1. A compound has a high melting point, does not conduct electricity in the solid state but will conduct, electricity when dissolved in water. It must contain __________ bonds.

2. The structure of an ionic solid is known as a _______________.

For the first one, I put the answer ionic and for the second one I put the answer crystal lattice structure. So if you can, can you tell me if I'm right and if I'm wrong can you please explain to me what the actual answer is.

I know what you think you want to hear. You think that substances with high MP's and which dissolve in water to make ions which conduct electricity will contain "ionic" bonds. But that simply isn't always the case.

To classify bonds as either "ionic" or "covalent" is a vast oversimplification. "Ionic" and "covalent" refer to the two extremes of bonds and are essentially "ideal bonds". Real bonds have characteristics of both. Bonds with high ionic character are very polar.

Solids can be classified either as discrete molecules or as network solids. Network solids typically have high melting points and run the gamut from 100% covalent as in diamond to bonds with high ionic character, such as CsF. When you use the term "crystal lattice" you are talking about a network solid. But in a crystal lattice the type of bonds can be essentially anywhere across the bonding continuum between "ionic" at one end, and "covalent" at the other.
