What are the most actual environmental issues in Australia(to base a study research on)

Hello, everyone. I am a student in Stockholm University (Sweden), who is very interested in doing a master's research project in Australia. Even though Australia is not one of the most polluted regions in the World, there can still be some threats to the unique environment of it.
The field of study is Environmental Science and it would be very good to pick an interesting (ideally, an actual) environmental problem that my thesis work would be based on.
At the moment my area of interest is water/water quality. It would very good to know whether there are any known problems related to, f.i. ground/drinking water quality in any region of the continent? Alternatively, the pollution of other spheres is a topic of interest, aswell.
I would like to ask you to help me to find out some information about the major environmental concerns in Australia and, if possible, opportunities to participate/contribute in a research project.

Thank you very much for sharing any information. :)

Yes, the 'Murray-Darling' is an extensive river system that travels through much of Australia, arising in Queensland in the north and finally reaching the sea in South Australia. It provides the water to irrigate much of Australia's agricultural land, but because people take water from it all the way along, and because we were in drought until recently (and are now in flood!), there was so little water left in the river by the time it got to its end that the mouth was silting up, and the river getting salty. Water is without doubt Australia's biggest environmental issue, and further study of the Murray-Darling would be very valuable... beause the current La Nina won't last forever and we'll be back into drought again...

Side note: The great Australian poem 'My Country', by Dorothea Mackellar, written in the very early 1900s, says "I love a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains, of rugged mountain ranges, of droughts and flooding rains" - and she knew what she was talking about!

Climate controls the mode and seasonality of water movement; for example, the hydrology of a stream in a narrow alluvial valley will be different in wet temperate Tasmania (where hydrological processes are dominated by regular, winter-dominated rainfall) than in the arid interior (where hydrological processes are controlled by high evaporation and infrequent, variable rainfall).
