Probably the best known example is the crane that uses an electromagnet to lift junk cars. Lot's of others include the one in a hard drive that positions the read/write head, how about the ones in atomic accelerators that keep the bits going around a circle path.
How it works: most simple is to say electricity going through any wire causes a magnetic field around that wire; make the wire into a coil shape and the magnetic field is concentrated (strong enough to do some kind of work).
