Hah! Electricity was not 'invented,' it was 'discovered,' and that long before either Tesla or Edison (and their famous and interesting conflicts). Electric phenomena have been studied since antiquity (Wikipedia), though what we moderns think of electricity (as something you can turn on and off) maybe not quite so far back. The invention of a chemical cell for creating a direct current (Edison's favorite flavor) is disputed, with archaeologists unearthing jars they think may have been used to store the correct combinations of chemicals and metals to create an electric current. Wikipedia says the first chemical cell was invented by Volta in 1798, but Leyden jars using capacitance (essentially lots and lots of static electricity) to store electricity were in use by 1748. Electricity can of course be generated by scuffing slippers on a carpet on a dry day. Nikola Tesla (I recommend you read about him on Wikipedia, then look for other sources - he was a fascinating man with much written about him) worked with alternating (or varying) current, often at very high voltages, and made many discoveries and inventions that we use to this day. Typical American house current is Tesla's favorite alternating current (though in most computers, for example, that has to be converted by a power supply to Edison's favorite Direct or Steady current for the computer to work).

No. No one invented electricity. Electricity had already been fairly well characterized by the 19th century. William Gilbert was the first "modern" scientist to characterize electricity, in 1600. Ampère, Faraday, and Volta did all their work on electricity before people like Tesla and Edison were even born.

Tesla was an engineer. Like most engineers, his work was based on pure science research from earlier scientists.

Yes, and he invented much much more than that. Sadly, Edison was a dick and took credit for them all.
