How do you find the percentage of something

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-05-01] [Hit: ]
With me so far?Good.Now you have to know how to cross-multiply fractions.It sounds difficult to describe it, but its easy to do.You multiply each numerator with the denominator of the other.......
for instance,If a couple went out for the evening and spent 13.50 and sixty percent went for the drinks how much would each drink be?how would you find the answer?

Percentages are simple. All a percentage is, is something over 100:

50% = 50/100
25% = 25/100

With me so far? Good.

Now you have to know how to cross-multiply fractions. It sounds difficult to describe it, but it's easy to do. You multiply each numerator with the denominator of the other. Let's say you want to cross multiply 1/3 and 4/12. Here's what you'd end up with:

1/3 = 4/12

(1 x 12) = (3 x 4)

12 = 12

I picked those two fractions on purpose. When two fractions equal each other, their cross products will be equal. It's a good test to see if two fractions are the same. Let's try it with 2/5 and 6/15

2/5 = 6/15

(2 x 15) = (6 x 5)

30 = 30

Ta-dah! So far so good? Great!

Now if you put these two principles together, you can figure out percentages really easily. Let's try one. What is 75% of 360?

First, we know that a percentage is just something over 100, so

75% = 75/100

So we need to find what part (let's call it x for now) of 360 that is equivalent to 75/100. So it could be said that

x/360 = 75/100

Let's cross multiply

100x = 27,000

Now we solve for x. To do that, whatever you do to one side of the equation, you have to do to the other. So if x is being multiplied by 100, to get rid of the 100, you have to divide each side by 100. If you do that, here's what you end up with:

x = 270

So 270 is 75% of 360.

I'll get you started on your word problem, but you'll have to finish it.

60/100 = x/13.5

You should be able to figure out the answer from here. Your problem doesn't state how many drinks were ordered, or if all drinks cost the same, so I can't tell you how much each drink was, but you'd be able to figure out how much was spent on drinks in total.

I hope this helps!

Assuming there were 2 drinks and that they were equally priced, if 60% of 13.50 was for drinks, each drink would be 30% of 13.50 (1/2 of 60%) or 0.3*13.50 = $4.05 per drink

-
to get 60% of $13.50, first divide by 100, then multiply by 60, or just multiply 13.5 by 0.6

13.50 / 100 = 0.135
0.135 x 60 = 8.1
or
13.5 x 0.6 = 8.1.

If there were 2 drinks of equal value it's $4.05

-
you read "of" as multiply or times:

60% of 13.5 is the same as 0.60 * 13.5

since it's a couple then divide by 2.
