1/2 (x + 1) = 1/3 (x - 1)

This can be written as (x + 1)/2 = (x – 1)/3.
Two fractions equal to each other form a proportion.
Simplify a proportion by cross multiplication:
3(x + 1) = 2(x – 1)
Take it from there.

For 1/2 I'll say .5 and for 1/3 I'll say .33 just so that it's easier to read. Understand that I'm not rounding my calculations like that, though.

.5(x+1)=.33(x-1)
.5x+.5=.33x-.33
Move the terms with x to the left, and without x to the right.
.5x - .33x = .33 - .5

1/2 - 1/3 = 3/6 - 2/6 = 1/6
1/3 - 1/2 = 2/6 - 3/6 = -1/6

(1/6)x = -1/6

Multiply both sides by 6
