Oh hi there =),

Steps:

1- y² - 5y - 24
2- (y-8) (y+3)
3-Answer: (y - 8) (y + 3)

Explanation:

The first step in order to factor a polynomial is to find the GCF (Greatest Common Factor), in the expression of y² - 5y - 24, there is really no GCF. So therefore, we skip to the next step which is setting it up into two binomials. We first can label the expression of y² - 5y - 24 as a = 1, b = -5, and c = -24. To get started, we find two numbers that will give us the product of c which is -24 and when you add/subtract it, will give you the middle term of b which is -5. So two terms that will give me the product of -24 can be 8 and 3, and when we subtract them it'll give us -5 as long as we make the 8 negative. So set it up into two parantheses which would be (y - 8) (y+3). Btw a which is 1 goes into the first part of our parantheses, that's why we have two y's, because the y is squared.

Hope I helped!! ^_^

first you split y2 into (y ) and (y )

then you have to find 2 factors that multiply to -24 but add to a negative 5

the 2 factors are -8 and 3 because -8 x 3=-24 and -8+3=5

so your answer is (y-8) and (y+3)

-
you need to find a, b such that
a+b =-5 and a times b =-24
a= 3 and b =-8
so
y^2-5y-24 = (y+3)(y-8)

yxy-5xy-2x2x2x3

-
( y - 8 ) ( y + 3 )

-
[y+ 3][y - 8]
