so these two numbers are two high.Trying something in the middle, say, 18 and 20 does indeed give you the product of 360.......
1) Find two consecutive even integers whose product is 360.

2) two boats travel from the same dock at the same time; one heads north while the other boat heads east. two hours later the boats are 26 kilometers apart. If the northbound boat travels 7 kilometers per hour faster than the eastbound boat, find the rate of each boat.

Please show [work so I can understnd the process, than you so much.

-
1) Let the two numbers be 2x and 2x+2

So
2x *(2x+2)=360
4x^2+4x=360
x^2+x=90 [dividing both sides by 4]
x^2+x-90=0
x^2+ 10x - 9x -90 =0
x(x+10)-9(x+10) = 0
(x+10)(x-9)=0
So x=-10 or x=9
But x = -10 is not acceptable as it is negative.

So the two numbers will be 9*2=18 and 20

2) Let the eastbound boat travels at a rate of x km/h,
so the northbound boat should be traveling at (x+7) km/h

As the two boats going in opposite direction, the sum of their traveled distance will be the total distance between them.

So x*2 + (x+7)*2 = 26
2x+2x+14=26
4x+14=26
4x=26-14=12
4x=12
x=12/4=3

So the eastbound boat rate is 3 km/h
and that of the northbound one is 3+7=10 km/h

#1 - You can solve it by using a number of methods: spreadsheet or simply by reasoning. Here are two lines of thought in reasoning through the problem:

A - The larger that two consecutive even numbers are, the larger will be their product. So, simply try two consecutive even numbers, say 10 and 12 and note that their product is 120. This shows that you need to select larger even numbers. Try 20 and 22, and this would give you a product of 440, so these two numbers are two high. Trying something in the middle, say, 18 and 20 does indeed give you the product of 360.
