Let the universal set U = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8}. Let A = {1, 3, 5, 7} and B = {1, 4}.

Determine the set A' u B.

(Be sure to notice the complement symbol applied to A)

-
A' = {x| x is in U and not in A}

A' = {2, 4, 6, 8}

B = {1, 4}

A' U B = {1, 2, 4, 6, 8}

Making lists is really not hard. You don't need someone to do this for you. If you can write a shopping list, you can do this.

A' means the complement of A in U. Write down a list of everything in U that isn't in A. In other words, cross out 1, 3 5 and 7. Write what's left in brackets.

Now A' u B means that you're going to add the elements of B to that list. If it's already in the list, don't write it twice.
