4a = 7 or 4a = -3
a = 7/4 or a = -3/4 <==ANSWER

so you have 4a = 5+ or - 2(since its an absolute value)
step 2 4a = 7 or 3
step 3 divide both sides by 4, you get 7/4 or 3/4
step 4 substitute both answers for a whichever one gives you five is the answer.
step five I got 7/4 as the answer, since 4(7/4) - 2=5

Anytime you're dealing with absolute value equations remember that what is inside the | | is the "distance" from 5. So, make yourself a real number line and say (1) 4a-2 = 5 and (2)
4a-2 = -5 and just solve both these equations and you'll have your answers. (1) a = 7/4 and
(2) a = -3/4. Plug them in and check...they do....
