1) Expand (x-1)^2 + 2(x-1) -1
I get x^2 -2 but the answers say it is x^2.

2)
Rearrange to make x the subject.

y = x^2 + 2x -1

Question 1
(x - 1)² + 2(x - 1) - 1 = x² - 2x + 1 + 2x - 2 - 1 = x² - 2 unless you have misread the question.

Question 2
y = x^2 + 2x -1 = (x - 1)^2

(x - 1)² = y

x - 1 = ± √y

x = 1 ± √y
