You are reducing a map of demensions 2 ft. by 3 ft. to fit to a peice of paper 8 in. by 10 in. What are the dimentions of the largest possible map that can fit on the page??

A) 6 2/3 in. by 10 in.
B) 5 1/3 in. by 10 in.
C) 8 in. by 6 2/3 in.
D) 8 in. by 10 in.

This is NOT homework and NOT a test or quiz. This is a practice packet for an end of course exam on a course that I haven't taken in months. It is NOT due.

Pleeeeeaaaasssseee tell me how you found this. I need to know for the test.

The map is 24" X 36".
So the formula is: 24/x = 36/10 ( 10 is one side of the piece of paper,x is the other dimension needed)
36x=240
x=6.666
So the answer is A: 6 2/3 X 10

The answer is A.
First you need to convert 2ft by 3ft into 12in by 18in.
Then, you look and multiply 12in by a faction to make it 8in. Here, the fraction is 2/3.
The fraction that multiplies with 18in to make 10in is 5/9.
Because you want the largest area possible, you want the smallest fraction you would multiply both by, and because 5/9 > 2/3, you would times both numbers by 5/3
Hence, your answer is A.
