Royce has $1.30 in dimes and quarters. He has one-fourth as many quarters as dimes. How many of each doe he have?

number of dimes = x
number of quarters = y

given:
25y + 10x = 130
x = 4y

so
25y + 10(4y) = 130
25y + 40y = 130
65y = 130
y = 2 ---> x = 8

2 quarters + 8 dimes = 50 + 80 = 130cts
qed

He has 2 quarters and 8 dimes. Because 2*25c = 50c and 2*4*10c = 80c
80c + 50c = $1.30

8 dimes and 2 quarters
