does the track also move forward? Common sense tells me yes but what force is making it move forward? Again are there two friction forces?Could someone please explain this in detail. Thank you. okay I'm a little confused. Newton's 3rd law says that every action has an opposite and equal reaction. So if a box is sliding on the ground(being slowed down by friction) what is the opposite and equal reaction to friction? I'm think theres another friction force in the opposite direction but I dont really get it.
Say if we take the same box and put it on a track supported by wheels (no friction). When we push the box forward, does the track also move forward? Common sense tells me yes but what force is making it move forward? Again are there two friction forces?

The trick with Newton's third law is to understand that the reaction force acts on a different body than the action force the body itself exerts: If A exerts a force on B, then B exerts an equal but opposite force on A.

So if the table exerts a force on the block (we would call this a friction force) then the block must exceed an equal but opposite force on the table. If the table itself would be mounted on a frictionless track, it would move in the direction of the block.

Taking this to extremes: if the friction is very large (push very hard down on the block) you can push the table forward..)

Of course, the force generation is symmetric: if the table exerts friction on the block, the block exerts friction on the table. This is simply because friction is a force between two objects, a property of the two materials, not just one.
