I sort of get it but I want to make sure I understand every step I do in these problems.

Because "velocity" is a vector it has magnatude and direction. Think about it. If you are driving East at 2 m/s and your friend is driving West at 2 m/s how does the distance between you change in 1 second. Well you go 2 m and your friend goes 2 m, so the distance between you is 4 m and that difference happened in 1 s ===> Your SPEED of separation is 4 m/s. NOTE: That it is a speed because there is no direction.
