a). What is the force on an alpha particle suspended in a 1000 N/C electric field? Notice that the charge on an alpha particle is +2e and the mass is 4 amu. Hint: e is the positive value of the charge of one electron, and 1 amu is the mass of a proton and neutron, you can convert these to MKS by looking online. b). This electric field is created by two oppositely charged metal plates. If the alpha particle is released from the rest how fast would it be going when it hits the negative plate? Assume it travels 1cm before it hits.

a)
F = q*E = 2*1.6E-19*1000 = 3.2E-16 N
b)
a = F/m = 3.2E-16/6.68E-27 = 4.79E10 m/s²
v = √(2ax) = √(2*4.79E10*.01) = 30952 m/s
