Question for my physics class......what is the reason for the shape of the electric light bulb (in terms of science??)
-
A sphere is the strongest shape for a glass object, and for a light bulb, which runs pretty hot, is ideal for evenness of heating and light emission.
So the bulb is mostly spherical, but as it needs to have an opening for mounting and electrical connections, it is faired out into a neck in such a way as it is still mechanically strong in relation to its weight.
This is the form of the traditional incandescent bulb.

they can be easily made in that shape and they have no edges which makes them durable...and glass is equally heated from all sides equally so no breaking due to expansion during heating

Are you talking about the traditional incandescent or the compact fluorescent?
