Just want to know what the average payback time for solar panels is doing some research for a project

depends on a lot of factors. Typically 10 to 20 years.

I recently had a salesperson at the door claim nine years. But someone who does panel installations and in whom I have more trust mentioned 17 years a couple of years ago.

My guess is that with advances in technology, it's somewhere in between those extremes. But as Bill says, it depends on where the panels are used (mostly cloudy vs mostly sunny, and orientation re the Sun on the roof), and on the technology efficiency (e.g., power produced per per panel installation and material cost).
