I'm afraid to tell my family I want to be a physicist. Help

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 12-05-03] [Hit: ]
worked on HW in class and didnt take any time to study.Ive been out of community college for a few years now and I have Ds and Cs in all my math classes on my transcript because of my old ways.BUT the past few months, Ive been studying math and the weird thing is, I understand calculus without any major issues. Ive taken practice exams online,......
Basically, I never excelled in math in high school or community college where I studied graphic design. At the beginning of EVERY math class, I'd be the one with the highest grades but mid-way, I stopped paying attention, worked on HW in class and didn't take any time to study.

I've been out of community college for a few years now and I have D's and C's in all my math classes on my transcript because of my old ways.

BUT the past few months, I've been studying math and the weird thing is, I understand calculus without any major issues. I've taken practice exams online, answered over a hundred questions in a calculus work book and managed to get 95% of it correct.

My family assumes that I'm horrible at Math and my college classes seem to have reflected that, but I don't feel horrible anymore..I'm just terrified of telling them I want to be a physicist because I'm sure they won't take me seriously. That and I plan to go back to that community college and talk to a college adviser about what to take/how to transfer afterwards, etc and I'm TERRIFIED that they'll look at my grades and go "tsk tsk, physics major? i don't think so.."

Any ideas on what to do to get out of this rut?

Let me tell you something, if you dont do the things you want to do in life then it'll keep knocking at your door. The ignorance will eventually bury this, but it'll kill your spirit. Life is about following your intuition and taking risks because someday we all will end up in a grave. There are four steps of fears you gotta overcome to achieve your goal, and the first is accepting the fact this dream is your calling. They wont take you seriously unless you show them that you are serious. They'll get over the disappointment, because they are your parents.

I'm 35 and my school grades look like I should be writing this in crayon, I'm also studying to be an electrical engineer and score no less than 98% in my exams, if you have a passion go for it let your hard work and success do the talking for you.

Yes. Break the umbilical cord. You're a big boy now; act like one. Make your decision and then make your way. If you're not cut out for physics you'll find that out in a hurry as you tank your courses. Then go into something you both like and are good at. If you're good at physics and A's (no B's) show it, then apply for a grant or scholarship and keep at it.
