What is gravity’s role in the acceleration of falling objects

It pulls on your science book when it falls off your desk in school for example. And the longer that gravity pulls, the faster that book will go...and thats called acceleration.......
I need this because I'm studying gravity. I have a list of science topics for my grade, and this was on it, so I'd appreciate some help. Keep in mind I'm almost a 6th grader so please don't make your answers too complex.

Gravity is a force that pulls on everything. It pulls on your science book when it falls off your desk in school for example. And the longer that gravity pulls, the faster that book will go...and that's called acceleration. It will keep going faster as long as the gravity keeps pulling and until, WHAM, the book hits the classroom floor and wakes all your classmate up...and the teacher.
