Candle carousel's work on convection, but does this mean that there is no aerodynamic lift/force operating at the level of the propellers to make them turn in a certain direction?

It is not differential pressure LIFT, but transfer of momentum from the rising warm air to the slanted plates. Since the momentum hits the plates at an angle there is a force component (Impulse = Force * time) that causes the plates to rotate.

Aircraft do the same thing to get part of their LIFT not from the Bernoulli Principle but the transfer of momentum from the Relative Wind to the bottom of the wing due to the Angle of Attack
