What happens when the pollen reaches the egg? what do the fertilized eggs become

In the most simple example : Egg+sperm (both haploid, containing only one set of chromosomes) turns into a zygote (diploid, 2 sets of chromosomes like you and me). The zygote will divide and eventually form an embryo which will develop further into an individual.
