Okay, I've been wondering and google is no help. What animal mothers will abandon young they do not believe to be their own. I do also know some animal father's will possibly kill their mate's offspring if he doesn't think it is his own.

And if anyone might know what they use to tell if it is theirs or not? Scent, sound, sight?
*Note: Not birds, I know they have a poor sense of smell.

When a new mal lion takes over a pride, he kills all the old male's young and mates with the females.

Any species can have examples of mothers abandoning young. There are VERY few examples of times when the young would not be their own. Very difficult for the mother to not know.

In mammals it's often scent and some other factors.

In the case you are asking none, if a female bonds with a baby at birth it's their baby. How would a female not know a baby she birthed is hers? I have seen videos of male lions and chimps kill babies from other fathers, kinda sad. Human parents are the only ones I can think of that kill their own.
Just re read your question...mammals don't normally have kids dumped on them like some birds do.

ALL insects/amphibians/crustaceans/fish/moll…
NO male animal "knows" it's offspring....none can "think"!
Cuckoos ALWAYS use another birds nest & care.

There's no fact in any of this, kid.

Maternal care is the exception in the animal kingdom.
