Apollo 11 questions... please help!

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-05-03] [Hit: ]
Later, there was a Shuttle also called Columbia. Two very different spacecraft with the same name.Technically, the Apollo 11 spacecraft were called CM-107 and LM-5. Columbia and Eagle were call signs used by the crew and ground controller.......
Okay, I have to do a project and I am really confused. So I know that Eagle was the module that Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the moon with. But was the main thing that they launched from the earth with a shuttle or what? And what was the name of that?

I know Columbia was in there but on one website, it called Columbia a shuttle and on another it called it a module...

Please, can someone clear this up for me? Thank you so much!

The Apollo 11 Command Module was called Columbia. Later, there was a Shuttle also called Columbia. Two very different spacecraft with the same name.

Technically, the Apollo 11 spacecraft were called CM-107 and LM-5. Columbia and Eagle were call signs used by the crew and ground controller.

Columbia was the command module of the Apollo 11 missions. It was a little tin can that they shipped the astronauts up into space with. It docked with the Eagle in orbit and flew to the Moon.

To more accurately describe its shape, it was a cylinder with a cone on the end. You can find pictures on Google. Look for pictures where the Eagle is attached.

Make no mistake, the Columbia module has no connection to the Shuttle. The shuttle didn't exist then, and could not have gone to the Moon anyways.

The vehicle Armstrong and Aldrin actually landed on the moon with was a Lunar Module they named the "Eagle." The Columbia was their command module and remained in orbit with Michael Collins on board. The rocket they launched with was a Saturn. There is a space shuttle named Columbia but it had nothing to do with the moon landings.

The big rocket engines together were called the Saturn V.

Columbia was the name of one of the space shuttles, the one that broke up on re-entry in 2003.

Columbia was also the name of the Command Module for Apollo 11.

That's at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Same name, different spacecraft.
