What's with the smoke trails in the sky or is it chemicals

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 12-05-13] [Hit: ]
Breathe enough of that in all at once, and youre dead as a doornail!-Its not smoke and its not chemicals. its water. Water is of course a chemical itself, but I doubt thats what the question meant.......
This seems like a waste of time and money and there must be a purpose.
Are they hiding something from us?

Everybody knows it's chemicals. The most common in contrails is the dangerous chemical dihydrogen monoxide, to be precise. Breathe enough of that in all at once, and you're dead as a doornail!

It's not smoke and it's not 'chemicals'. it's water. Water is of course a chemical itself, but I doubt that's what the question meant.

Burning jet fuel (or any hydrocarbon) produces huge amounts of carbon dioxide and water. At high altitude the water vapour produced condenses into clouds of very fine ice crystals or water droplets. This has been the case ever since petrol driven engines first took to the air. In the 1940s pilots used to find this very annoying, as during bombing raids they would sometimes be flying with great long vapour trails behind them leading enemy planes right to them!

There's no waste and no purpose. It is simply an unavoidable consequence of operating a jet engine at altitude.

It's not smoke. It's water.

A contrail is nothing more than a long, thin cloud of water vapor left behind by an aircraft passing at high speed. Please make an effort to get your information from credible sources. Ask yourself if people claiming that contrails are some form of dangerous chemical have any actual evidence to that effect; you'll find that most, like one answerer here, will only say that it's "clearly a chemical dump" without any evidence.

From all the answers you were given, I suggest you find out more. The first answer listed sounds really bad, dihydrogen monoxide is simply water. Try bresthing this and you will die.

"""""In the dihydrogen monoxide hoax, water is called by an unfamiliar name, "dihydrogen monoxide", followed by a listing of real effects of this chemical, in an attempt to convince people that it should be regulated, labeled as hazardous, or banned. The hoax is designed to illustrate how the lack of scientific literacy and an exaggerated analysis can lead to misplaced fears.[1] "Dihydrogen monoxide", shortened to "DHMO", is a name for water that is consistent with basic rules of chemical nomenclature,[2] but is not among the names published by IUPAC[3] and is almost never used.
