53-off course, the answer is C i.e. 0.53 inch.since a gap of 0.......
A metal pin must fit in a round opening so that there is AT MOST 0.01 inch clearance all around when the pin is in the center of the opening. The diameter of the opening is 0.55 inch. Which of the following would be a suitable diameter in inches for the pin?

A: 0.57
B: 0.56
C: 0.53
D: 0.52
E: 0.51

-
0.55 - 2*0.01 = 0.55 - 0.02 = 0.53

-
off course, the answer is C i.e. 0.53 inch.

since a gap of 0.01 is to be left, it follows that there would be a 0.02 inch must be left [to facilitate 0.01 in from both the sides of 0.55 inch].

-
C. 0.01 inch clearance is on both sides of the diameter so the pin must be bigger than .53 (.55-.02) and less than .55 (so it can fit in the hole).
