I have been fascinated with the human body and how much it can do. What are some interesting facts about the human body and what makes it unique?

-
- The average human brain has about 100 billion nerve cells.
- Nerve impulses to and from the brain travel as fast as 170 miles (274 km) per hour.
- It takes the interaction of 72 different muscles to produce human speech.
- The average life of a taste bud is 10 days.
- The average cough comes out of your mouth at 60 miles (96.5 km) per hour.
- Human thigh bones are stronger than concrete.
- When you sneeze, all your bodily functions stop even your heart.
- Babies are born without knee caps. They don't appear until the child reaches 2-6 years of age.
- Women blink nearly twice as much as men.
- Blondes have more hair than dark-haired people do.
- The length of the finger dictates how fast the fingernail grows. Therefore, the nail on your middle finger grows the fastest, and on average, your toenails grow twice as slow as your fingernails.
- Your skull is made up of 29 different bones.
- The human heart creates enough pressure to squirt blood 30 feet (9 m).
- You were born with 300 bones. When you get to be an adult, you have 206.

Humans are most comfortable with a circadian rhythms of slightly shorter and longer periods than the Earth's 24 hours. Researchers at Harvard have recently shown that human subjects can at least be entrained to a 23.5-hour cycle and a 24.65-hour cycle (the latter being the natural solar day-night cycle on the planet Mars). But the natural circadian cycle becomes 25 hours in total darkness. Perhaps the earth did rotate further from the sun when the saltiness of the oceans resembled the saline content of human blood.

The process of keratinization takes about 27 days, keratinocytes are skin cells and what this means is that we are constantly shedding skin.
Olfactory receptors only live about 2 weeks.
Taste buds live about 10 days.
And since our red blood cells only live 100-120 days we make 2.4 million new ones every second.

in just 24 hours... the heart beats about 100,000 heart beats. the heart moves 2,000 gallons of blood many times through about 60,000 miles of blood vessels
