the teacher told me that the odds of that happening are VERYYYYY slim. so he decided to get all smart, and told me that if by monday, i could find out the odds of having naturally blonde hair and blue eyes is, i would get bonus marks. please help,......
today i was in biology, and we were talking about genetics.
i am a girl and have naturally blonde (like golden blonde, not dirty blonde) hair and light blue eyes.. the teacher told me that the odds of that happening are VERYYYYY slim. so he decided to get all smart, and told me that if by monday, i could find out the odds of having naturally blonde hair and blue eyes is, i would get bonus marks.
please help, cuz i need them ( had a test this week, i got 9 out of 42, so really need these marks)

He asked you a dumb question, so there's a whole lot of ways to answer him without being wrong. I'll give you a genetic approach which he can't prove wrong...

Depends on the genotype of your parents.

for our sake lets just pretend one parent has brown hair brown eyes and the other had blonde hair and blue eyes. He can't prove you wrong.

to understand this, first understand that blonde hair and blue eyes are recessive. When a trait is determined there are two alleles that will influence this. Alleles are written as two letters ex(BB bb Bb) Capital means the dominant trait, and the lowercase means the recessive one. so BB means brown brown, bb means blonde blonde and Bb means it has brown and blonde. This hybrid Bb will only show brown because that is the dominant trait... but it has that blue trait even though it is hidden so they can pass it to their children.

Okay so all in all recessive means you must have two recessive alleles to show the trait in the person, and if you only have one recessive allele you can be a carrier for it but you won't actually look blonde, you'll have the dominant trait (which in our trait is brown)

So lets say that one parent is blonde and blue eyes. Only way for the alleles to work is bb bb. Two recessive alleles must be present for us to see this in your parent.

Lets say the other parent has brown eyes and brown hair.... In order for you to have been born blonde and blue eyes, this parent must have been a carrier for both traits. Bb Bb. this way you were born with bb bb. If they were only BB BB you could only have gotten a BB from one parent and bb from another creating Bb Bb... so we know that this parent must have been a hybrid Bb Bb.
