hello, I am working on a problem for homework that deals with dog furs and gender. here are the following phenotypes

Homozygous dominant black fur, Heterozygous spotted fur, & homozygous recessive white fur

they want me to cross a Black Male with Spotted Female showing F1 and F2. My question is, should X and Y chromosome be included in the punnet square? like for example

Dominant black male - X^B Y^B
Spotted female - X^B Y^b

or should it just simply be

Dominant Black Male - B B
Spotted Female - B b

-
No, gender is not involved in this problem, since fur color is not a sex-linked trait,. The ♂ is simply BB and the ♀ is simply Bb.

If a gene occurs on an autosome (non sex chromosome), then the alleles are not affected by sex. When a trait is sex linked it occurs on the X chromosome only, the Y chromosome only contains genes concerned with sex determination. So XBYB would always be wrong because a gene that was on the X chromosome would not be found on the Y chromosome.

So the cross is BB x Bb, unless you are given information that it is on the X chromosome.

it should just simply be

Dominant Black Male - B B
Spotted Female - B b
