-In the 1800s scientists didnt know that atoms even had electrons, let alone protons and neutrons. All they had was a way to measure the relative masses of the elements so that is what they used.It worked out quite well anyway.-Im pretty sure atomic mass is directly related to the atomic number.Try looking at Periodic Videosonyoutube.......
Why would Mendeleev and other chemists of his time arrange elements in the periodic table in order of atomic masses instead of in order of atomic number?

I dont know, any help at all is absolutely loved. <3

I'm pretty sure atomic mass is directly related to the atomic number.
