Will the earths magnetic field flip in 2012

Does it flip suddenly or does it take thousands of years? I'm not really clear on that.

For the magnetic field to flip, the field has to decrease to almost zero - then it could flip poles.
It takes thousands of years for that to happen, it doesn't just happen in a year or 2.

Takes thousands of years. Just like the Dinosaurs died out between 5-100 years AFTER the asteroid landed. Btw, the 2012 crap is most likely an Alien visitation. I'm not an alien "freak" but I do believe the Mayan's stopped their calendar on that date because it was on a countdown not to doomsday, but to something they were looking forward to. If not alien friends, definitely not doomsday!
