Why is largescale desalination of seawater expensive

There so much water in the sea that the whole world can be supplied clean drinking and washing water from the sea alone. Why is it expensive?

-
It needs much energy to get the salt out and this is expensive.

There is plenty of water in the world but shallow wells are not particularly healthy and you need big hefty drills to dig to the 50 or more metres to give you a pure supply from a deep bore hole. Also a deep well needs a deep well pump which needs power so supplying clean water is not that easy.
