The equation for this problem is: (chemical energy input) x .25 = mass x g x (number of steps) x (height of each step).Solve for number of steps. Make sure the units are consistent.......
If the human body is only 25% efficient in converting chemical potential energy to mechanical energy, how many steps must the woman climb to work off her breakfast??
the answer is to be multiply 0.25 or divide by 0.25???
I am confused ..in text book the total energy required to climb is multiplied by 0.25 why??

The woman must work off her breakfast. If her body is 25% efficient in converting fuel to mechanical energy, then she will use 4 calories of fuel (breakfast) to produce 1 calorie worth of climbing.

The term "energy required to climb" is ambiguous. Is the book talking about how much (chemical) energy the climber must input, or is it talking about how much (mechanical) energy is required to raise her body weight the required number of steps.

The equation for this problem is: (chemical energy input) x .25 = mass x g x (number of steps) x (height of each step). Solve for number of steps. Make sure the units are consistent.
