Can you help solve 16=4w + 2w - 2

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-05-11] [Hit: ]
Its still 6w (or 6*w).Now, we need to continue cancelling out whatever is happening to the w thats keeping it from being by itself. Since we have 6w, 6 times w, ask yourself what is the opposite of multiplying by 6?......
It looks like this:

2 + 16 = 6w - 2 + 2
18 = 6w

So, now we have 18 = 6w. We're getting close, but we're not there yet. See, the w isn't by itself yet. It's still 6w (or 6*w). Now, we need to continue cancelling out whatever is happening to the w that's keeping it from being by itself. Since we have 6w, 6 times w, ask yourself what is the opposite of multiplying by 6? Dividing by 6! If you take 6w and divide it by 6, the multiply by 6 is cancelled out by the divide by 6, (6*w / 6 = w). Just like before, we can't do it to only one side, we have to do it to both.
18 / 6 = 6w / 6
3 = w

So, now we know that w equals 6.

I may have covered things you knew, but I wanted to make sure and hit all the points. Good luck!

Hi:

16 = 4w + 2w - 2 - original equation

16+ 2 = 4w+ 2w - 2 + 2 - Adding the additive inverse of a number to both sides of the equation to move it to the other side of it

18 = 4w + 2w - Addition

18 = 6w - Addition of like terms

18* 1/6 = 1/6* 6w - Multiplying the reciprocal of a coefficient to both sides of the equation to solve for w

18/6 = w - Multiplication

3 = w - Division

Proof or check:

16 = 4w + 2w + 2 - original equation

16 = 4(3) + 2(3) - 2 - plugging w with 3

16 = 12 + 6 - 2- multiplication

16 = 18 - 2 - Addition

16 = 16 - Subtraction

it checks and equals

Problem # 2 :

2x - 8 + 3x = 7 - orignal equation

2x+3x -8 = 7 - Rearrange the equation with like terms

5x - 8 = 7 - Addition of terms

5x - 8 + 8 = 7 + 8 - Adding the additive inverse of a number to both sides of the equation to move it to the other side of it

5x = 15 - Addition

1/5 *5x = 15 * 1/5 - Multiplying the reciprocal of a coefficient to both sides of the equation to solve for x

x = 15/5 - muliplication

x = 3 -Division
